Class A Power Rankings: Week 3
In week 3, the Metro took what seemed to be easy days and caused some turmoil. This unexpectedly crazy week shook up our rankings. Here's what we came up with:
10. Lincoln North Star (9)
The Navigators moved to 4-2 on the season with a 1-1 week. They first popped into our weekly rankings after week two, and they deserve to be here. Led by 20 points per game (four game sample on MaxPreps) from Donovan Williams, they've survived a couple tests and fallen in a close game to a solid Lincoln Southwest squad thus far.
9. Lincoln Southwest (NR)
After dropping out last week due to a very poor second half at Papillion-La Vista South, the Silver Hawks slide back in after a solid 2-0 week. Alex Bahe’s boys are led by double digit averages from JaQuaylon Mays and Collin Kohl, and the Hawks are 4-2 on the year. Don’t miss your opportunity to see this squad play.
8. Kearney (NR)
Drake Beranek’s Bearcats make their way back into the top ten after going 2-0 in week 3, which was highlighted by a convincing win over an experienced Grand Island squad. Kearney is led by Kanon Koster, a guard who can get to the basket and go through about anything thrown at him. These Bearcats are a squad you don’t want to miss.
7. Bryan (5)
Bryan falls two spots after breaking down in the last minute at Bellevue West on Friday. They had a lot of missed jumpshots down the stretch, and that cost them. The Bears have played exceptional defense thus far, giving up 63 points per game thus far. They’re battle tested, and they’re only coming in more hungry each week.
6. Omaha Central (6)
Eric Behrens finally returned to coach at home in the Eagles’ sixth test of the year when they took down Bellevue West in the final seconds. But they began the week with a 22 point loss at Burke, which is a team they’ve now lost to twice. They might be one of the most bipolar team in the conference as they bounced back with two big wins on Friday and Saturday.
5. Bellevue West (4)
The T-Birds drop a spot after going 1-1 on the week, but it could’ve easily been 0-2. Although they move the ball around really well and have lots of assets, Bellevue West pretty much won that game due to bad shot selection by Bryan. The then took on their first true road test and dropped that. It’s still early, but it looks as though they’ll be in close competition all year.
4. Burke (8)
The Bulldogs earn the farthest positive jump within this week’s power rankings after a huge statement win over Central on Tuesday. They took down an Omaha South squad that’s going to be very sharp once they work out some kinks and then finished the week three sweep with a 20 point win over Bellevue East. This is a Bulldogs squad that isn’t going to back down after bad losses as they’ve shown this week.
3. Millard South (2)
The Patriots appeared just once in week three; a game in which they nearly dropped to a 2-4 Papio-La Vista South team. Nonetheless, they found a way and they’re undefeated courtesy of 21 points a game from Kyle Perry and 15 from Tyrell Carroll. The Patriots just keep rolling.
2. Lincoln East (3)
Jeff Campbell’s Spartans gained a huge win on Friday as they took down Grand Island on the road. They then improved to 6-0 on the season with a ten point win over Westside. They were able to force Booth and Thompson to score 35 of Westside’s 49 points, which is always a good sign. These Spartans are for real.
1. Creighton Prep (1)
Prep tops our weekly rankings for the second week in a row after rolling over Elkhorn South by a score of 76-52. The Jr. Jays have multiple assets on the outside including Kyle Leudtke and Jayden Temme, and the paint is controlled by Akol Arop every time he’s on the floor. Prep takes the week three crown.
